hi, I'm Chelsea London!

Chelsea London Phillips

old enough to make this joke/f/transient

who am i?

I am a native New Yorker and world traveller. Friends have referred to me as Carmen Sandiego, but I like to think I have better taste in hats. Aside from the obvious passion for photography, I’m also a sucker for alternative comedy, thrift stores, bands whose names begin with ‘The’, and really bad puns (my husband will attest to this one).

why photography?

Growing up with designer and photographer parents, I thought hanging out in darkrooms after school was the norm. Composition, color theory, and lighting were again a natural recourse for hours spent at the Met and MoMA as a child, and making a mess in art studios. Add all this into the fact that I cannot draw to save my life, and I think it’s clear where my love of the medium comes from.

what’s your educational background?

Convoluted. A serial transfer student, I finished out my studies at Marymount Manhattan College on the Upper East Side where my focus was Communication Arts and History, with a minor in Sociology. I spent my college years and a few after working in live television production in New York, Boston, Seattle, Los Angeles, and London. I’ve been lucky enough to work with some of the most talented people in the industry, which really pushed me to better my own skills.

you said you’re a traveller?

Why, yes, I did. I have lived in 6 countries (including the US - cheating, I know) and have visited over 40. I do spend most of that time wandering around Europe, but am only missing South America and Antarctica as far as continents go. Despite all the numbers I just threw at you, for me, the travels aren’t about checking countries off a list. When I travel, I do so with the purpose of integrating as much as possible into the local culture. You most often find me struggling to order that one bread behind the bakery counter with points, grunts, and broken speech in whichever language is local. My love of travel is complemented by my love of language learning. I can speak German at an advanced level, and Spanish in a beginner conversational level - and French at a Muzzy episode one level.

what gear do you use?

I am loyal to my Fujifilm set-up, but have owned Canon and Nikon in the past, as well as varying film cameras.

do you sell prints?

Yes! Prints are available directly from my store, which is regularly updated. If you have an image in mind that is not listed for sale, reach out to me and we'll make it happen.
